“First of all, thank you for considering us to be a part of your special day.  I’m often asked ‘when did you start baking?’ or ‘how long have you run your business for?’  As is often the case with things, the answers are not entirely simple but I will have a go at sharing a little of myself and the history of Simplicity Cakes by Sarah

My first memory of making a decorated cake was for my little brother when I was about 12 years old.  It was a ski jump…well, it was supposed to be. The whole thing fell over, but I had fun making it and his friends happily ate it. A decade later and baking became a creative outlet to my regimented University degree. It was something which became increasingly important to me and, as I developed my skills, it was time that my (expensive) hobby started to pay for itself so I established my own business.

‘The Chandelier Cake Company’ as it was then, opened in 2013. It rapidly became clear that my passion lay with wedding cakes and more specifically, cakes which were luxurious and visually striking in in their simplicity. We reflected that change in direction in the company and became, ‘Simplicity Cakes by Sarah’, thereafter producing new cake designs which incorporated elaborate techniques into an otherwise blank canvas.  So we have remained for the past 5 years.

The best bit about making wedding cakes is receiving the ‘thank you’ cards from Brides or, better still, when a Bride returns a few years later to order a Baby Shower or Christening Cake!  Those moments make the long days worthwhile – and the days can be very long.  We seek to provide a truly premium and luxurious product meaning that everything is made freshly (never frozen or bought pre-baked) and just for the customer who has ordered it.  Most of the work is done in the immediate run-up to the weddings with only sugar flowers being prepared in advance.  It is a premium service but demands premium working hours too!!

That said, the hard work pay off – over the years, our designs have won medals at competitions, been featured leading industry magazines and used for styled Bridal shoots at venues across the region.  We have delivered cakes from Torquay to Dumfriesshire and worked with Brides living around the Globe, including the USA, Dubai, Germany and Australia.  While time zones can be tricky, it is a real privilege to be able to do this.

Now, I run the business with the support of my husband, Thomas. He keeps me sane, provides vital encouragement and a critical eye when I’m adding the finishing touches to a cake at 2am.  Without his support, Simplicity Cakes would not be where it is today.  There is also no one else I would trust to help me carry a 35kg wedding cake across the road in the snow!  Together, we aim to provide you with the best possible customer experience and a cake that you will be proud of and remember on the most important day of your lives.
